GREG “THE VILLAIN” VENDETTI (10-2-1 7KOs) WINS THE VACANT NEW ENGLAND JR. MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP WITH AN EXCITING 8 ROUND UNANIMOUS DECISION OVER MALIK JACKSON.
Boston - This past Thursday May 5th, Murphy’s Boxing’s 3rd installment of the Memorial Series took place in front of a sold out crowd at the Melrose Memorial Hall.
The main event saw the ring return of undefeated blue chip prospect Mark “Bazooka” DeLuca (14-0 10KOs). DeLuca a United States Marine Corps Veteran was facing by far the toughest test of his career against the rough Salim Larbi (20-6-2) in the 8 round middleweight bout. Suffering the 1st cut of his career in the very first round from an inadvertent elbow, DeLuca showed he could fight through the adversity, as he went on to win a hard fought unanimous decision over 8 tough rounds. Controlling the pace of the fight, Mark routinely got the better of the heated exchanges, staggering Larbi on multiple occasions. In an action packed bout that had the capacity crowd roaring with each punch, DeLuca landed sharp four punch combinations through out the fight, continuously working both the body and head. Looking like he hasn’t missed a beat since a hand injury kept him out of the ring for a year, DeLuca now looks to return to the ring sometime in the summer. The three judges scored the fight 79-73, 79-73, 78-74, all for DeLuca.
In the Co Main event Greg “The Villain” Vendetti (10-2-1 7KOs), who hails from nearby Stoneham, captured the New England Jr. Middleweight Championship with a unanimous decision over Malik Jackson. Vendetti continuously cut off the ring and stalked Jackson, landing over hand shots to the head before he would trap Jackson on the ropes and unleash a vicious body assault. Jackson was able to finish the fight on his feet, but the always exciting Vendetti continues his current six fight win streak. All three judges scored the fight 80-71 for Vendetti.
Making his Murphy’s Boxing debut New Haven Connecticut’s Charles “The Truth” Foster (9-0 5KOs) remained undefeated with a five round destruction over veteran Jose Corral (19-21 12KOs). The dangerous Corral with 12 knockouts to his credit, was no match for Foster, who showed great ring generalship as he methodically destroyed Corral until in the 5th round the referee stepped in to save Corral from any further damage.
In other bouts, undefeated Light Heavyweight Steve Collins Jr. (7-0-1 3 KOs) from Dublin Ireland made quick work of Ralph Johnson with a 2nd round knockout. Dropping Johnson in the 1st round, Collins picked up the pace in the 2nd and delivered a devastating punch to the body that had Johnson on his back withering in pain as he was counted out by the referee. Working the corner for Collins Jr. was his dad, former WBO Super Middleweight and WBO Middleweight Champion, Steve “The Celtic Warrior” Collins.
In a 8 round Jr. Middleweight bout, Aleksandra Lopes (15-3-1) fought one of the most inspiring fights of her career as she beat the very tough Christina Campfort (4-1 3KOs). Lopes controlled the fight with her jab, keeping Campfort at bay and got the better of the exchanges when she moved on the inside.
In a 4 round featherweight bout Timmy Ramos (4-0-1) from Framingham MA, proved to be way to much for Emmanuel Valadez as he punched him around the ring for two rounds before knocking him out.
In the opening bout of the evening Super Middleweights Godson Noel and Antonio Chaves Fernandez fought to a spirited split decision draw.
The night proved to be another exciting boxing card by Murphy’s Boxing with many celebrities among the sold out crowd. Those in attendance included film director Peter Berg, who is in Boston filming Patriots Day, about the Boston Marathon bombing, actor Kevin Chapman from the TV show Person of Interest, retired boxing champions Steve “The Celtic Warrior” Collins and Micky Ward, as well as Mike Tyson’s trainer Kevin Rooney.
